Rhyme Time

Families,

We are rhyming mad this Term!  Some online games that should work on smartphones, tablets/ipads and computers are below.  Click on a link below for a rhyming game.  Why is rhyme so important?  It is a basic foundation skill for spelling and reading!

SSP – Speech Sound Pics Green Level

Hi All,

As mentioned at our first Family Information Sessions, we utilise a number of programs and strategies to teach Reading, Writing and Spelling. SSP developed by the ‘Reading Whisperer’ (Emma Hartnell-Baker) is the developer of one strategy that we use. Now that we have explored the 44 phonic sounds in the English language using Jolly Phonics, the students will work through the SSP approach. Starting with green level. This covers the sounds S A T I P N. The following clip from http://www.readaustralia.com/ssp_green.htm works through the sounds as well as words that can be sounded out with these sounds.

Thank you,

Miss Richards

News Telling

Dear Families,

Throughout the year the children regularly participate in news telling. News telling links to developing self-confidence, speaking and listening skills, oral language development, increasing memory and concentration skills and is an important part of the Prep curriculum.   During this time your child tells the class about a topic and includes information that answers:

–          Who

–          What

–          When

–          Where

–          Why

–          Their feelings about what they’ve shared

At the end of their news telling the class are asked questions about your child’s news using who, what, when, where and why questions.

A Simple Example of News Telling

I went to the beach with Mum on the weekend.  We jumped over the waves and watched the ocean looking for turtles. We went to the beach because mum said it was a lovely day for it.  I had lots of fun and felt happy.

Who – Mum and me

What – went to the beach

When – on the weekend

Where – the beach

Why – mum said it was a lovely day for the beach.

Feelings – I was feeling happy

This term we are talking about family.  The children need to tell who is in their family, where their family lives or has lived (not addresses just towns), what they like best about their family, when they were born, why are families important.  They can bring a photo or photos of their family and other things to help them with their news (not toys or expensive items).

News telling always has a roster so that all children have equal opportunity to participate.  If your child has forgotten to prepare for news telling they still have their turn but it is obviously better for them if they know it is their turn and have practised what they are going to say.  If your child is away on their rostered day, then they will be given a new day soon after.  This doesn’t mean your child needs to give a word perfect speech.  They just need to remember what they want to tell about.  A reminder will be sent home in your child’s homework book the week prior to their news telling.  Any questions please ask your child’s teacher.

This post will be sent home as a letter this coming week along with a roster.
